I’ve been in business as a coach for 24 years this month. I’ve written more blogs than I can remember … hundreds. A bunch about turning over the New Year.

I’ve talked about how resolutions don’t work and how we should change our mindset to setting intentions instead. I wrote that in Jan. 2005.

I’ve talked about the START … STOP … CONTINUE … CHANGE Model.

It’s a very useful exercise to do at this time of year.

Today, I want to introduce the idea of asking yourself what you could give up in this new year.

And I don’t mean give up like I did for Lent every year growing up Catholic! Girl Scout Cookies Thin Mints, by the way.

What stories are you going to give up? Stories about events, others, and, of course, yourself? What resentments? Or hurts?

For me, I’m giving up “angsting” about a family member who’s ghosting me. It’s been a couple of years now and it still hurts. And since it’s a family member and I’m a coach and should be able to fix this, it’s been particularly hard. But I can’t fix it. It’s really time to give this one up. Hope for the best. Intend the best. But give up the angst.

So, every darned time I go down that road, I’m going to remind myself of this commitment. I’ll talk to myself very intentionally. Mantras. Repetition. “Give it up. Let it go.” Every time. Until it gets better and ultimately goes away.

So, my questions to you are …

What are you willing to give up?

What do you need to let go of?

In your life? In your business?

We all know we’ll feel better for it.
