How You Can Finally Do that Thing That’s Been Nagging at You

I want to tell you a story from long before I was a coach, but very relevant to my here and now.  And given what my clients say, probably relevant to you as well.

I’m in a seminar conducted by Landmark Education, a company that offers personal development coaching.  And I’m being coached by the seminar leader around my experience of life as totally overwhelming and how I can’t get it all done.

And she takes the conversation in a direction I didn’t expect … and really didn’t like!

In a nutshell, she said the reason I was struggling with things I couldn’t get done was not that I had too much on my plate, but rather that I wasn’t committed to getting them done!

Boy, she didn’t get it at all!  I was totally confused and annoyed by her response and just couldn’t get the distinction she was trying to teach me.

Here’s what she wanted me to know.

We, as human beings, get done what we’re truly committed to.  And the other stuff … not so much.

Now, fast forward to today.

I see that distinction showing up all over my life and my clients’ lives.  I would never not get something done for my clients and my business.  It nags at me.  I rarely, if ever, can let go of things that need to be done in my home, so it’s clean, organized, and pleasing to the eye.  I just can’t!

But I do let go of my self-care.  I say I’m committed to meditating and stretching … preferably in the morning.  And lately … and for too long … it’s not happening.  I jump into work and the list of things I need to get done.

It’s because I’m more committed to my business and my clients than myself.  In other words, I’m not committed!

Oh crap, she was right then and she’s still right!

The message for you is to pay attention to what you’re not getting done.  The things you say you want to do but continue to not address.  For many of my clients who have their own businesses, that’s focusing on marketing and business development with any consistency, because it challenges them.

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll see what you’re truly committed to … and what you’re not.

Here’s the thing.  You can’t guilt or berate yourself into doing this.  It’s about the commitment.  And where does commitment come from?  It starts with the vision … the ideal.

So, here’s my request of you.  Look at what you’re not getting done that you say you want to do and reflect on your commitment.  Look at what you do instead.  That’ll give you a big hint as to what you’re really committed to.

And when you want to address the things you’re not doing, start with the vision of what your life will be like … how different it would be … when you have successfully addressed it.  What positive aspects will you enjoy?

Strengthen the commitment by seeing the possibilities first and go from there.  And share your commitment with others, so they hold you accountable.

And now, I have to go vision to practice what I’ve preached.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Love,
