The Critical Hidden Element to Make the Best Decisions

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that about six months ago we adopted a puppy, bringing this little bundle of fluff and joy into our family.  Like a good business owner and coach, I didn’t take this decision lightly.  I actually considered the move for quite some time and did my due diligence before taking the leap.

It all started when we visited a dear friend of ours.  She had two wonderful Shihpoos, Oscar and Walter.  Walter was just a baby and I fell in love!  And the added surprise was here was a breed I wasn’t allergic to.  Most dogs turn me into a sneezy, wheezy mess!

So, the seed was planted, and a puppy was in our future!

We were then introduced to another wonderful breed of dog … the Havanese.   Also hypoallergenic … check! … with many of the traits we hoped for in our puppy.  I really wanted a companion dog, and that’s what Havanese are specifically bred for.  Another check!

I did all the research on the breed.  Learned what I could as a first-time dog owner and found a reputable breeder.  And in April, we brought Willy home.

Willy is all that we hoped for … except for one critical thing.  He was supposed to be hypoallergenic and, so I just assumed I wouldn’t react to him.  Not the case.

I’m allergic to him!  Oh no!  How could this be?

After many months of homeopathics, natural supplements, and all kinds of protocols, I finally have to admit that, yeah, it isn’t something else I’m reacting to.  I’m allergic to my fluffy bundle of joy!

And yet, Willy is now firmly entrenched in our hearts and he’s not going anywhere!

So why am I telling you this, and how does it relate to your life?

Even though I know that Willy is ours for life, guess what I’ve been doing in the back of my mind?

Second guessing my decision.

Thinking about what I should have … would have … could have … done differently along the way.

Why didn’t I just get a Shihpoo?  Why I didn’t do a “test” of this breed before I brought him home and fell in love?

But here’s the thing I know in my heart of hearts as a life and business coach … when you make a decision, it’s in your best interests to do whatever it takes to make that decision “right.”

All our second-guessing and “what ifs” only work to shoot us in the foot.  You can’t expect a positive outcome if you’re constantly re-working the decision you made in the first place.

Our decisions in life … our choices … need our whole-hearted belief … and an uncompromised vision of the future.

So, where might you be having a hard time “making your decision right?”

Where are you stuck in a doom loop of second guessing?

The first step to improve the situation is to actually take the time to look at where you’re stuck vs. just letting the same thoughts bubble up over and over unconsciously whenever you think about the subject.

Next, frame your decision in the best possible light.

And finally, declare it done.  You made the right decision.  Stop questioning and start celebrating … or at least accommodating.

But, isn’t that just putting lipstick on a pig and engaging in some sort of denial of reality?

Only if you know for an incontrovertible fact that your decision was a mistake.  But none of us can know that for sure, because the story isn’t over yet.  That decision that might look iffy now might turn out to be the smartest thing you ever did.

Life’s funny that way.  Ya never know.

So, make it right and love what you’ve got.

Love,
